Carrying a Tune

vocal change and identity in perinatal musical theatre performers

ABOUT THE PROJECT

I’m Michelle. Mum of two, voice coach and performer.

This is a project firmly rooted in personal experience. I originally trained as an actor at the Arden School of Theatre in Manchester and was lucky enough to work fairly consistently after my graduation, mostly in small scale touring – Theatre in Education, Outdoor musicals and immersive entertainment. I retrained to teach voice at Royal Birmingham Conservatoire and thought I was pretty well set up to start a family.

I diligently read all the baby books and knew what sort of physical changes to expect, but what I didn’t expect was how much my voice would change. I tried finding out more about why this was happening to me, but there was so little information out there. So, I decided I would have to be the one to provide the information and enrolled on my PhD at Guildhall School of Music and Drama. I hope you find this useful.
